Good coffee at home comes down to picking the right machine for how you actually drink it. A pod machine suits one quick cup before work. A drip brewer suits a household that gets through a pot. An espresso machine suits anyone who wants to pull their own shots and steam their own milk.
Types of coffee machines
Capsule machines are the easiest option. Drop in a pod, press a button, done. No grinding, no measuring, and almost nothing to clean. The trade-off is you’re locked into whatever capsules fit the machine.
Drip coffee makers brew straight into a carafe and are the cheapest way to make several cups at once. Look for a warming plate or an insulated carafe if the coffee tends to sit around.
Espresso machines give you the most control. Manual and semi-automatic models let you dial in the grind and the shot, while fully automatic machines grind, tamp and brew on their own. If you drink flat whites or cappuccinos, you’ll want a steam wand or an automatic milk frother.
What to check before you buy
Milk. A steam wand takes practice but gives better texture. An automatic frother is faster and more forgiving.
Water tank size. Small tanks mean refilling every few cups. Worth checking if more than one or two people are using it.
Cup clearance. Some machines won’t fit a travel mug under the spout.
Built-in grinder. Fresh grounds make a bigger difference to taste than most other features. Machines without one mean buying a separate grinder or sticking to pre-ground.
Cleaning. Removable brew groups and drip trays save a lot of hassle. Machines that need regular descaling are worth knowing about upfront.
